Mental illness. These two words can mean or suggest so many things to each of us. It can often be difficult to find information about mental illness that's easy to understand and helpful.

If you are concerned about your mental health or a loved one's, you want information that is honest and helpful and hopeful. Maybe you want to know what depression is and what's available in treatment.

Maybe you've read a story in the newspaper about someone with schizophrenia  or watched a television show about someone living with bi-polar disorder. Perhaps you have a friend whose daughter has an eating disorder. You want to help in some way so, as a first step, you decide to learn more.

Whatever the reason you are looking for information about mental illness, this a good place to start. We've included information on the most common mental illnesses. It's not a complete list, yet. We will be adding other conditions.

If you are looking for information about a condition that's not listed here, talk to your family doctor. If you don't have a family doctor, visit a medical clinic or a community mental health clinic. Ask questions. Ask for help.

There are other resources available in your community where you can get information and help. Some of these resources have websites, too.

These are a few of the most common mental health disorders:

  • Depression
  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Personality Disorders
  • Eating Disorders
