A Film-Making Project in Mental Health

A Film-Making Project in Mental Health

In the summer of 2009, clients at a local mental health center were offered an opportunity to connect with one another, and the community, in creative ways. Psychologists Brad Kelln and Andrew Starzomski teamed up with their colleague, Spiritual Care Therapist Barry Banks, to work with clients to create movies.

Clients learned about the many elements of shooting videos:

  • planning script elements
  • collaborative improvisation,
  • production of music to fit scenes
  • the basics of digital movie camera technology
  • computer editing.

The short films were recently screened at a film festival at the center. Awards were presented to honour a range of on- and off-camera achievements.  For more on the project contact Drs. Kelln or Starzomski: brad.kelln@cdha.nshealth.ca or andrew.starzomski@cdha.nshealth.ca.

Look for more productions from this film project in the months ahead.   In the meantime, enjoy the clients' work featured below!
