Questions for your doctor

With any illness - whether physical or mental -  it is crucial to have all the information you need in order to make decisions about  your care.

You have the right to know the details of your diagnosis, treament and recovery. Ask as many questions as you can think of and as often as you need to. Write them down and take them with you when you visit your doctor and other health care providers.

You may want to know:

  • Do I have a diagnosis?  Sometimes the diagnosis is not clear for a while.
  • What are these medications for?
  • Are there side effects and what are they?
  • If these medications cause dry mouth how will it affect my teeth?
  • How do I handle dry mouth if it happens?
  • How will the medication help me?
  • How long will it take to have an effect? Some can take as long as six weeks.
  • What if I miss a dose?
  • What else is important besides medication?
  • Where can I go to learn more - support groups, websites, books?
